As a homeowner, you know that there will be times when a simple repair will save you money. The issues with simple plumbing repairs comes in with having the right supplies when you need them. If you want to prepare for common plumbing repairs, then you need to get the right supplies. Here are three plumbing supplies that can save you money later and possibly keep you from having to make an after hours repair call.

Sealing Compound

One of the easiest ways to fix a small leak or to reseal in an area around a pipe joint is to use a sealing compound. You can buy sealing compounds for various plumbing materials at most hardware and plumbing supply stores. Plastic pipe cement, PVC primer for other sealants and pipe attachments, and thread sealants are all available for public purchase. Having a sealing compound in your supplies that is made for your specific pipe material can help prevent leaks, water damage, and other issues until you can get a plumber to completely fix the problem.

Leak Detector

You may not have heard of a compound known as a leak detector. If you are noticing higher water bills, wet floors, or other signs there may be a leak then leak detector compounds may help you. These are used to help find very small leaks in plumbing lines. You simply spray or apply on the leak detector and it will either change color or it will form a bubble when it comes in contact with water. This can help you narrow down a leak, reduce water damage, lower your water bill, and possibly fix an issue that is a minor swap like a washer or joint.

Water Heater Parts

One of the areas that can cause severe plumbing issues with costly repair options is the water heater. Some of the issues tend to be with the valves leaking, blown heater fuses and parts, or anode rods. By having a water heater parts kit on hand, you can make minor repairs as they are needed to your water heater. You can stop leaks, seal off valves and joints, and replace rods to prevent corrosion.

Keep in mind, these three plumbing supplies are items that are used to make quick repairs. These are not meant for major plumbing issues. If you are having a major plumbing issue, contact your local plumber for assistance. If you notice the repair you have made is no longer working, or there are other issues after the repair, contact your plumber as soon as possible.
